Often comes a time when we are extremely stressed and in a dire need for a relaxing holiday where we are encouraged to do just sitback and relax and do nothing at all. Of late if you too are feeling the same but don’t know where to go then Alibaug is just the answer and if you are a resident of Mumbai or other adjoining area, then it gets all the better as you are spared the hassle of traveling over a long distance.

Alibaug also written as Alibag and Alibagh is a wonderful coastal town, sitting in the Raigad district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The town and the surrounding regions are the historic locality of Bene Israeli Jews. Alibaug was developed by Sarkhel Kanhoji Aangre, the naval chief of Shivaji’s Kingdom. Formerly known as ‘Kulaba’ the present name of Alibaug has an interesting story to it, that is it is named after a rich man in the city called Bene Israelite Ali, he owned several plantations of mangoes and coconuts in his gardens, which locals referred to as Alichi bagh from which the new name of the region appeared.

Alibagh is a popular tourist destination renowned for its various pristine beaches, marine forts and the crystal clear water that makes the region an ideal place to soak in the sun and have fun in the sand along with enjoying swimming and other such sports in the fresh water of the region. The most popular beach of Alibagh is the Murud-Jajira, other than that other beaches of the region include the Alibaug Beach, Kihim Beach, Akshi Beach, Nagao Beach, Korlai Beach, Mandwa Beach and others.

Being a popular tourist destination the region attracts a large number of tourists from all over the country and as such catering to the lodging needs of the tourists are the various hotels in Alibaug that can be found across all budget ranges thus catering to all holiday needs and pockets. The coastal town of Alibaug is best visited during the months of May to October.

Alibaug has a good connectivity to various regions of the state and also rest of the country either directly or by several connecting transportation. Alibaug has no airport or a railway station, the nearest airspace from Alibagh is located in Mumbai whereas the railway stations in Panvel 85km away and Roha 50 km away are the major connecting artery of Alibagh. In addition to that buses are operated on a regular basis by the state government and also the private operators from the various regions in the state to Alibaug.

Another very interesting way of arriving at Alibaug is by means of the ferry and catamaran services available from the Gateway of India that takes tourists to a waiting bus in Rewa that carries on for the rest of the journey to Alibaug.
